The engagement typically covers program strategy: which product categories make sense for a given fanbase or audience, how to price a range, which vendors or agencies to bring in, and how to structure a merchandising operation from scratch or fix an underperforming one. A consultant may recommend a merchandising agency or a specific supplier as part of that work, but does not usually hold the licensing relationship or run production itself.

How This Differs From an Agency or Supplier

A merchandising agency and a merchandising supplier are both judged on what they physically deliver: finished, licensed products. A consultant is judged on the strategy and the vendor relationships that result from it. Some agencies offer consulting as part of a broader service, which can blur the distinction in practice, but the underlying test is the same: is this person or company accountable for the strategy, or for the finished goods?

When Consulting Makes Sense

Consulting tends to add the most value early, before a club or brand has committed to an agency or supplier relationship, or when an existing merchandising program needs an outside view on why it is underperforming. Bringing in a consultant after a production relationship is already locked in narrows what advice can actually change.

Related Glossary Terms

Licensing Merchandising

Merchandising Supplier

A merchandising supplier manufactures or sources physical products to a buyer's specification, handling production and fulfillment without necessarily managing the design, licensing relationship, or brand approval process a merchandising agency owns.

Licensing Merchandising

Merchandising Agency

A merchandising agency designs, produces, and often licenses physical products on behalf of a brand, sports team, or IP owner, managing the process from concept to finished goods.

From the Magazine
Eco Friendly Merchandising: A 2026 Guide for BuyersBest Fanatics Alternatives for Club-Level Merchandising
